L&T is a reputed supplier to the Nuclear Power industry in India, and its offerings range from manufacturing technology development, equipment manufacture, and plant services. In the field of power electronics, L&T Technology Services has expertise in product development activities ranging from prototyping to production to support services. Recently, the company was engaged to design and engineer analog power supply for a nuclear reactor, in compliance with the nuclear standards.
Background and Challenge: The company had to design 1.5KW analog power supply for a nuclear reactor with stackable and reconfigurable safety features. The design had to incorporate the ability to withstand seismic vibrations as well as comply with standards for nuclear power plant lifetime and plant reliability. All the hardware was to be designed according to nuclear requirements and standards.
The Solution: L&T Technology Services took majority ownership for the development of power rack involving analog design. The following solutions were developed for the nuclear reactor:
- L&T TS developed a redundancy-built stackable design for the power rack that could withstand seismic vibrations
- It provided a design that could supply power 24x7 with 20 seconds hold time in case of power failure
- It designed power supply for Class 1E Instrumentation and control standards
Quantifiable Benefits: L&T TS provided the nuclear reactor with analog power supply that could withstand 3- directional seismic stress up to 7g. All the nuclear standards for plant reliability were adhered to; with lifetime up to 25 years and reliability of a subsystem greater than 2000 Failures in Time (FIT). Additionally, the hardware and controls were designed for Class 1E standards.
