Edge to Core to Cloud Architecture

Hitachi Vantara introduced a number of products and services to help customers build and support a modern edge-to-core-to-multicloud architecture.

AI-driven Data Center Operations Solutions

The company announced a powerful next-generation storage and infrastructure foundation with a new scale-out, scale-up architecture. The solution includes Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) 5000 series, the company’s latest and fastest enterprise-class storage array, along with the new Hitachi Ops Center management software and updated Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System.

The VSP 5000 series is an enterprise-class flash array optimized to deliver best-in-class performance and resiliency by taking advantage of serial-attached SCSI (SAS) architecture, non-volatile memory (NVMe), and storage class memory (SCM).  Powered by the new Hitachi Accelerator Fabric, it can help users get to insights and business outcomes faster.  The company says it is the world’s fastest NVMe flash array, with up to 21 million IOPS and response times as low as 70 microseconds.

The VSP 5000 series is built for digital business.  Its self-protecting IO architecture and quadruple redundant fabric deliver an industry-leading 99.999999% availability.  (That’s not a typo:  it’s eight ‘nines’ availability.)

End-to-End Cloud Services

Expanded and enhanced capabilities for Hitachi Vantara’s cloud services offerings were also announced.  The company’s newly formed Hitachi Cloud Services portfolio includes cloud migration services, application modernization services, managed services for IT operations, storage and data protections, as well as consulting services and Hitachi Enterprise Cloud (HEC).

Together, these cloud services can accelerate the deployment and productive use of hybrid cloud and multicloud environments.  Hitachi Cloud Services are designed to speed the implementation of VMware cloud solutions, migrate and modernize apps and data for Microsoft Azure faster, and provide a comprehensive set of managed services to optimize the management of public and private cloud resources.

Updates to Hitachi Cloud Migration and Application Modernization Services

These services are designed to enable customers to embrace the cloud based on their business needs to achieve agility, enhance governance, and realize cost benefits.  New updates include:

  • A cloud-agnostic approach to provide applications and workloads with consistent data services across edge, on-premises and cloud environments
  • The use of data to adapt existing applications to perform their best in public clouds
  • The Hitachi Cloud Accelerator Platform with enhanced automation to migrate and modernize applications for Microsoft Azure
  • The Hitachi Cloud Accelerator Platform, which can be delivered as a managed service using HEC to optimize DevSecOps principles in hybrid cloud environments
  • Cloud Migration and Application Modernization services for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure

Enhancements to Hitachi Enterprise Cloud (HEC)

HEC adds support for a single pane to manage private and public cloud resources delivered as part of Hitachi managed services. This single cloud management interface delivers transparent visibility, which can reduce risks, costs, and time to value.  New enhancements to HEC include:

  • Speeding the deployment and first use of new VMware cloud solutions including VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware Enterprise PKS (Enterprise Pivotal Container Service) and VMware Cloud on AWS, adding it to the pre-engineered and pre-designed catalog framework of HEC
  • A single invoice for private cloud resources delivered by HEC and public cloud resources provided by Hitachi Vantara Cloud Operations Services
  • A real-time, multi-tenant data analytics platform that makes the Data Services Hub available as part of HEC for those who need it in hybrid cloud environments but have data or insights that must remain in a private cloud

Lumada Portfolio Expands to Accelerate Data Innovation Through DataOps

Industrial companies see the potential for analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and new digital business models to transform their operations, but their existing data management tools and processes often can’t keep up with the pace and complexity of modern digital business.  Hitachi Vantara’s new Lumada solutions address this need by enabling intelligent data operations, or DataOps. DataOps, a collaborative data management practice, employs policy-based, automated approaches to help enterprises improve efficiency and drive innovation by getting the right data to the right place at the right time.  New and updated Lumada offerings include Lumada Data Services, Lumada Data Lake, and Lumada Edge Intelligence.

Lumada Data Services

Lumada Data Services enables customers to orchestrate the ingestion, storage, discovery, preparation and delivery of governed data based on business policies for analytics, governance, and operational cost savings.  Lumada Data Services work together through shared metadata supported by intelligent orchestration and policy engines.  Data Services can be deployed in the cloud, in the data center, or at the edge; providing an agile data fabric and self-service data access for an enterprise DataOps practice.

Hitachi Vantara

Hitachi delivers Lumada Data Services through existing and new products including Pentaho 9.0 (featuring new data flow services), Lumada Data Lake (with a new data catalog and data curation services, combined with modern object store technologies), and Lumada Data Optimizer (which builds on new data placement services, providing a policy-based solution that can reduce costs and improve Hadoop resource utilization with an intelligent data tiering solution).

Lumada Data Lake

Lumada Data Lake is a next-generation, self-optimizing data lake, offering affordable multicloud storage, powerful data operations and simple end-user management.  Unlike single cloud-based data lakes that are expensive at scale and create vendor cloud lock-in, Lumada Data Lake is a cost-efficient offering at petabyte scale that creates a logical, self-curating data lake from edge to multicloud.  Based on the latest object store technology and Amazon S3 compliance, Lumada Data Lake is accessible from analytic engines hosted anywhere.

Lumada Edge Intelligence

Lumada Edge Intelligence, a set of containerized software services, can help organizations integrate, manage, and govern data from sensors, assets, and systems into business operations.  Lumada Edge Intelligence runs on a variety of qualified Hitachi and partner hardware – such as gateways – that connect to operational assets, equipment and systems.   Lumada Edge Intelligence enables DataOps and real-time insights at the edge.

Lumada Applications

Lumada consists of a core of platform services, architecture, and technologies that enable quick development and implementation of advanced digital solutions.  The technology foundation is provided through Edge and Data Services.  These provide connectivity, secured data management and analytics, and support the building and operation of digital twins. This environment presently supports three application suites: Lumada Manufacturing Insights, Lumada Maintenance Insights, and Lumada Video Insights.

Lumada Manufacturing Insights

Lumada Manufacturing Insights, a suite of Industrial internet-of-things (IoT) solutions, is designed to empower the manufacturing industry to achieve transformative outcomes from data-driven insights.  Using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and DataOps, Lumada Manufacturing Insights can optimize machine, production, and quality outcomes.

Among the customers present at the conference, Logan Aluminum used Lumada Manufacturing Insights to accelerate transformative change, eliminate data silos, and build a foundation for digital innovation; Precision Drilling increased its competitive advantage by realizing time to value with industrial analytics and the Lumada platform to process more than 20,000 data streams per second per rig, providing actionable information to the right people at the right time and helping make optimal decisions; and to accelerate the product supply for 5G, Ericsson is gearing up for an anticipated increase in new product introductions by establishing a digital innovation foundation using Lumada Manufacturing Insights.

Lumada Maintenance Insights

Predictive maintenance and asset performance management are common starting points for industrial companies embarking on their digital transformation journey.  Intelligent maintenance and repair solutions from Hitachi use advanced prescriptive algorithms, leverage networks of experts, and use analytics, video and augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) solutions.  Lumada Maintenance Insights can reduce maintenance costs by reducing repair hours and rework while increasing team productivity, increase asset productivity with significantly lower unplanned downtime, and reduce excess parts inventory by having the right parts in the right place at the right time.

Lumada Video Insights

Organizations want to capture data about their physical spaces, customer behavior, machine movements, and more. Video is becoming ubiquitous throughout cities, facilities, campuses, stores, airports and factories, but remains mostly underutilized.  Lidar can be used to similar effect, without raising privacy concerns.

Lumada Video Insights can transform this data into business, operational, and safety intelligence.  With it, organizations can gather new data though smart cameras, 3D lidar sensors, and edge gateways and integrate existing sources of data to Hitachi services.   Lumada Video Insights also permits storing and managing this data without degradation or losses through built-for-video converged infrastructure.  This data can be transformed into insights through video analytics, data visualization, and blending with other loT and business data for comprehensive intelligence.
