Hydrogen: A Sustainable Market Segment with Over Proportional Growth Expectations for Control Equipment

ARC Advisory Group research on hydrogen production and management systems shows that the market evolution for automation technology in the hydrogen world is different than in other industries. Investment decisions in industry are usually made based on return on investment; this is different for hydrogen plants. To achieve the global climate goals, Governments in Europe, the Americas, and Asia have created Hydrogen Funds. These funds refinance hydrogen plants, and the plant engineering and control equipment suppliers benefit from this. More than 250 projects have already been announced for the period up to 2030. These projects will be financed by the funds previously described. The market for automation technology in hydrogen plants will therefore develop faster than average and decouple from the normal market growth. This research provides a comprehensive and independent overview of control equipment markets in the four most important hydrogen applications. The report explains from a control equipment standpoint, where things stand today, and how hydrogen can help achieve a clean, secure, and affordable energy future, as well as what the market development for control equipment looks like.

Hydrogen Production and Management Systems Strategic Issues

Hydrogen Production and Management market trendsIn addition to providing a five-year market forecast, the Hydrogen Production and Automation Systems market research report provides detailed quantitative current market data and addresses key strategic issues as follows.

Sustainable H2 Control Equipment

Buying the right control equipment for hydrogen applications is not simple. Every purchasing process should be sustainable, and therefore equipment that is purchased is usually future proof. That is why the preferred choice is to buy standardized control equipment that has reached a certain market maturity. However, many hydrogen aspects are in early development mode. Such applications are not yet standardized, and the probability is high that other products will be used in the future. Therefore, the following purchasing strategy should be applied until 2025. If possible, do not use control equipment products that have been developed exclusively for hydrogen applications. It is better to use products that are also used in other oil & gas applications. This increases the likelihood of purchasing control equipment that will be available on the market for a correspondingly long time.

Hydrogen Bridges Regions with Renewable Energy and Industrial Centers

Today, more than 70 percent of global energy demand is generated from fossil fuels. Fossil fuel reserves are concentrated in a few countries. This results in a market dominated by a select few countries, which has repeatedly led to strong price fluctuations in the past.

Instead, if the global energy demand in the future is generated from environmentally friendly sources, there will be little concentration of energy supply, as many countries have the potential to generate renewable energy. This is then the change from energy stocks to so-called energy flows or from OpEX spending on importing fuels to CapEX spending on facilities for generating environmentally friendly energy (solar, wind or hydropower).

In 2050, 90 percent of electrical energy is to be generated in an environmentally friendly way, with wind and solar accounting for more than 60 percent of this. Not all countries are equally equipped with these environmentally friendly resources, which will lead to a specialization of individual regions. The opportunity offered by hydrogen in this context is that it uses electrolysis to convert renewable electricity into a form of energy that is more suitable for transportation. The competitiveness of individual regions will then depend on the difference between production costs and additional transportation costs. However, the hydrogen will be converted into carriers prior to transportation to optimize energy use for transportation. At the end of the transport in the industrial centers, pure hydrogen will be recovered.
