On 6th July, Schneider Electric held a one-day Innovation Day event with the theme “Advancing Singapore Towards Net Zero”, in commemoration of its 50th anniversary in Singapore. Lim Tuang Liang, Government Chief Sustainability Officer (GSCO) of Singapore Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), graced the event as the Guest of Honor.
Mr. Lim, Singapore’s first GSCO, was newly appointed this year to drive sustainability efforts in Singapore. During his welcome remarks, he shared several Singapore sustainability goals: the Singapore Green Building Masterplan (SGBMP) 80-80-80 goals by 2030; 100% cleaner energy vehicles by 2040; and increasing carbon tax to $50–80/tCO2e by 2030 from the current $5/ tCO2e; and how three aspects would be key to achieving these goals ‒ Simplification, Collaboration and Digitalization.
At the keynote address, Yoon Young Kim, Cluster President (Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei) at Schneider Electric, communicated the company’s sustainability commitment. This includes achieving carbon neutral operation by 2025, carbon neutral across the entire value chain by 2040, and net zero CO2 emission across the entire value chain by 2050.
Mr. Kim explained that embarking on the sustainable journey alone is not enough and needs to involve the entire value chain. There is a need to increase awareness on how to come together as one global community to meet sustainability goals, and Schneider Electric is committed to helping its partners and suppliers in this journey. In addition to what Mr. Lim had discussed on the significance of the roles of technologies and collaboration in achieving sustainability, Mr. Kim also talked about the importance of developing sustainability talents: a key aspect which Schneider has been focused on.
Jackson Seng, Vice-President, Sustainability and Strategy for Schneider Electric (East Asia and Japan), further shared about the urgency to act at his Strategy Talk session: “We need to save 3-5x more CO2 emissions between now and 2030 to be on course to limit global warming to 1.5oC”, and technologies to achieve energy resilient and net zero goals are already available. Using the Kallang Pulse, Schneider Electric’s headquarters building in Singapore, an exemplary smart sustainable building example, Mr. Seng showed what can be achieved. With Schneider’s wide range of EcoStruxure solutions, the building achieved carbon neutrality in 2020, and is the first to be awarded the Green Mark Platinum Award in Singapore, with a 50% energy reduction and being powered 100% by renewable energy during the day.
The event also includes breakout sessions covering industrial manufacturing, buildings, life sciences, energies and chemicals, and data centers. At the energies and chemicals breakout session, Christopher Chan, Vice President, APAC Energies & Chemicals, discussed with Jason Miao, Vice President of Development (Asia Pacific), Kent Engineering, and Satyendra Dubey, Director, Planning and Operations, AVEVA, on industry specific challenges. These include the economics to incentivize investors for sustainability efforts, the regulations in different countries, the market dynamics influencing the price of technologies, as well as the challenges when faced with multiple competing green technologies.
