Project Success Story

L&T Technology Services, with its extensive mechanical and design engineering experience, has executed design projects for manufacturers in the process industries, such as consumer packaged goods (CPG) including food & beverage, oil & gas, and chemicals to name a few. For one of their global food & beverage clients, the company successfully delivered concept engineering and detailed design for the addition of a new ice-cream manufacturing plant.

Background and Challenge: An effective CapEx plan during conceptual design phase of a plant’s project lifecycle enables companies to achieve manufacturing excellence by designing an agile manufacturing and supply chain facility capable of coping with fluctuating market demands. The concept engineering stage plays a critical role as the decisions made here may impact the entire project lifecycle, and moreover in determining the effectiveness of a manufacturer’s investment decisions. L&T TS had to deliver the concept engineering solutions, front end engineering design (FEED), and detailed engineering for the proposed addition of the new plant, including options to reduce the CapEx and early completion of the project.

Generally, the technologies, equipment, and hardware systems are not well understood in the initial stages of project planning.  Companies must be involved in detailed planning to understand and select appropriate assets, right from the early conceptual design stage in order to maximize the return on investments. Lack of user involvement or impulsive decisions can lead to higher cost of operations in the future, and the systems may lack proper collaboration.

The Solution: For the complete plant design and engineering, L&T TS used 3D design packages and applications, such as AutoCAD, AutoPlant3D, and Staad Pro. They offered the following solutions to the manufacturer:

  • Complete engineering for all buildings including packing lines, mix plant, high temperature short time pasteurizer (HTST), raw storage areas, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), engine room, electrical room, palletizer area etc.
  • 3D modelling of existing and new areas
  • Design of mix plant, packing lines and utilities

Quantifiable Benefits: To save valuable project time, L&T TS introduced the concept of early DED (deliverable expectations document) which resulted in early completion of project by 4 months. The end user also received critical inputs and solutions to reduce CapEx, and having in place a detailed investment plan on capital assets. Additionally, the entire project was successfully completed within budget, and was rated as the most successful project of the global client in 2015.
