Subsea Operational Excellence

According to Mike, Deepwater Subsea specializes in operational excellence for the oil and gas industry and has a focus on blowout preventers (BOPs).  A BOP is a piece of safety equipment that sits on the ocean floor underneath the drilling vessel.  It's the first line of defense if a well control event occurs.  The company provides BOP compliance inspections and real-time monitoring and ensures operational excellence for the equipment for the drilling contractors and the oil companies for improved subsea asset management.

Digital Transformation in Subsea Asset Management

At the ARC Forum, Mike spoke about operational excellence, digitizing the workers, and implementing technology to help those in the field to better, more efficiently perform their duties every day.  Digitalization involves access to documentation, PID drawings, and schematics for the rigs by those in operations and maintenance.  In subsea asset management, technology, combined with the data coming from the control systems, allows users to work more efficiently.

Technologies Used by Deepwater Subsea

Deepwater Subsea uses the OSIsoft PI System with its data historian to access the control system data.  From there, the company utilizes Hexagon PPM and smart PIDs, and a technology by Seeq for self-service data analytics.

Future of Technology Adoption

According to Mike, a key step in technology adoption involves the full integration of Hexagon’s J5 Operations Management Software and the digitized documentation available through mobile platforms.  The real-time data streamed to the users’ mobile devices allows them to improve subsea asset management.

Tips for Anyone Looking to Start Their Digital Transformation Journey in Subsea Asset Management

First, uncover gaps that you're exposed to by examining the difficulties and the challenges that your workers face.  As you're finding and filling these gaps, it will likely take several solutions to build the entire solution, don't be afraid to use a SaaS provider.  Deepwater Subsea had tried to build solutions in-house first and found the challenge was much greater than expected, and it then chose to use established solutions.
