In most process plants, it is impossible to install all necessary automation components in safe, non-hazardous areas. As a result, some form of protection is required to prevent fires and explosions that could occur when a hazardous gas and energy source combine. Fortunately, there are standards and associated products that, if properly designed, installed, and maintained, virtually eliminate the risk of an accidental explosion in hazardous areas.
Need for information
Process industries, especially chemicals, oil & gas, and refining plants, face numerous hazardous situations, with the potential to cause huge explosions. Specific examples of actual incidents include well-publicized explosions at Tri-Chem Industries in the US, Yibin Hengda Science and Technology Company in China, BASF plant in Germany, Skikda refinery in Algeria, and BP’s Texas City Refinery in the US. Lack of correct and timely information, leading to an inability to act appropriately to arising situations in hazardous locations, often contributes to these types of incidents. Currently, the main challenge for end users is to have “live maintenance” and a complete but non-intrusive view of operations along with situational awareness especially in hazardous areas.
Demand increases
Industrial safety measures are continually increasing to achieve higher plant and personal safety. The growing focus on the increasing industrial safety measures and standards, especially in process industries, is creating a significant demand especially for intrinsic safe, flame and explosion-proof hazardous area equipment.
