Artificial Intelligence Drives the Growth of Embedded Systems

New ARC Advisory Group research on the embedded systems software market reveals that next generation embedded systems will be powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies.  This includes  advanced intelligence technologies like cognitive learning, inference engines, artificial neural networks (ANNs), deep learning, embedded vision and speech, and embedded machine learning in smart edge devices.  ARC forecasts that in 5-10 years, 50 percent of all smart devices will have cognitive systems, and this includes edge devices for manufacturing and production systems, automotive, medical devices, and consumer goods.

“As cloud platform providers and chip makers confront today’s already-massive and rapidly growing volumes of data, stakeholders are wrestling with how data processing should be best partitioned between the cloud and network edge.  The current focus on the IoT in both the business and industrial sectors drives these discussions, which will be influenced to a significant degree by the current state of embedded AI at the device level,” says Dick Slansky, Senior Analyst at ARC Advisory Group and key author of ARC’s Embedded Systems Software Global Market Research 2018 – 2023 report.

“As companies continue to design next-generation smart connected products, embedded systems-enabled IoT will transform traditional business models, merging software, edge devices, and online connectivity that will drive intelligent factories and smart products,” added Slansky.
