Valves Market Data and Studies

In the process industries, industrial valves are one of the most important, yet often overlooked assets, in the entire plant.  Without reliable valve operation, most processes quickly become uncontrollable leading to unplanned downtime and potentially fatal consequences for both employees and associated plant equipment.  To correct this issue, valve suppliers and end users are increasingly adopting digital solutions including intelligent actuators, smart positioners, and other emerging IIoT technologies that provide access to data regarding valve and process health that was historically not available.  Unfortunately, many end users do not have the internal expertise to properly analyze this newfound wealth of valve and process data.  Consequently, few end users obtain the full value from their valve digitalization investments.  In addition, many process operators and maintenance staff remain reluctant to embrace the new work processes and buying habits needed to get the full value from these valve digitalization investments.

ARC Advisory Group’s suite of valve-related market analysis reports and supplier selection guides are invaluable tools for valve vendors and end users trying to navigate the ever changing market dynamics resulting from the trend towards the digital transformation of the heavy process industries, global pandemics, trade wars, currency exchange rate fluctuations, and dynamic economic swings.  From large scale, high-end valves designed for severe service applications to smaller scale, aseptic and hygienic valves for use in valve applications in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical markets, ARC has the valve market data you need.  ARC’s valve market analysis reports are used by all the leading global valve vendors to benchmark themselves against the competition and develop their business plans to optimize the opportunities provided by these turbulent market dynamics.  Likewise, ARC’s valve selection guides are used by some of the largest process manufacturers to ensure they choose a valve partner best suited for their regional, vertical, and valve application focus.

Control Valves

ARC Advisory Group has been covering the global control valve market dynamics on an ongoing basis since our first control valve publication in 1995.  ARC’s annual control valve market analysis report is trusted by all the leading global control valve suppliers to benchmark themselves against the competition and develop their business plans to optimize the opportunities provided by the ever-changing market dynamics.

Control valves are critical to the heavy process industries because they are used to maintain a process variable as close as possible to the desired set point.  Controller set points are typically flow rate, pressure, and temperature.  Product parameters, such as density, concentration, liquid level, and others, can also be controlled with control valves.

A control valve installation consists of a valve body, actuator, positioner, and accessories.  The body includes a bonnet assembly and trim parts.  Its design withstands fluid static pressure and differential pressure, allows fluid flow, provides pipe-connecting ends, and supports seating surfaces and a valve closure member.  Actuators are pneumatic, hydraulic, or electrically powered devices that provide the force to open and close the valve.  Positioners monitor and control true actuator movement to maintain a desired set point.  Accessories include electro pneumatic transducers, pressure regulators, hand wheels, position indicators, and limit switches.

Hygienic and Aseptic Valves

The global hygienic and aseptic valves market comprises of specialty valves primarily used for manufacturing, handling, and packaging applications that require sterile, “germ-free” conditions.  These valves are widely used in both food & beverage and pharmaceuticals & biotech industries. The other sectors include personal care, specialty chemicals, and other life science industries.

The hygienic and aseptic valves market is moderately fragmented. The market consists of few large-scale suppliers who specialize in manufacturing single-seat and multi-seat valves (also known as mix proof valves) for both hygienic and aseptic applications.  In contrast, there are several hundreds of medium and small-scale suppliers providing quarter-turn valve type for hygienic use.

The big food & beverage and pharmaceuticals products manufacturers prefer integrated solutions and equipment providers and key vendors with processing systems integration expertise. Therefore, the majority of the hygienic and aseptic valves market revenue generated via direct sales between the customer and suppliers who also specialize in the processing system, over individual component suppliers

On-Off Valves, Actuators, and Switchboxes

On-off valves or isolation valves are flow control devices with only two operating position – fully open or fully completely closed.  The global on-off valves market is highly fragmented, with several hundreds of players existing in the global market space.  Many of the leading suppliers have been following an inorganic expansion strategy by actively seeking opportunities for possible acquisition, to boost market share rapidly.  Mergers and acquisitions help valve suppliers expand their presence across regions and industries, and foray into new markets by inheriting new technologies.

There is stiff competition among suppliers, with key differentiation factors being pricing, lead time, quality, engineering support, after sales, and service capabilities. The on-off valves are typically sold as commodities, where system integrators or end user typically source the various parts forming the assembly from either various suppliers or distributors.

Pressure Relief Valves and Devices

A conventional pressure relief valve (PRV) has been the go-to technology in process plants to vent overpressure or as a final line of safety to avoid a catastrophic event.  The cost-effectiveness and the autonomous nature of operation have made PRV a prevailing technology for plant safety, over the years. In addition to conventions relief valve technology, this report also includes the revenue, growth and trend associated with relief devices such as rupture discs and other complementing auxiliary devices.

Pressure Relief Valves (PRV) and devices are employed for either relief or continuous venting of excess pressure accumulated in the process line. The valves or the devices are normally closed position with a predetermined pressure set point for operation with a self-actuation mechanism. The self-actuation mechanism in valves are spring loaded, weight loaded, or pilot operated

The global PRV and devices market is moderately fragmented.  Most of the smaller suppliers are focused on PRV technology in either the spring-loaded or tank vents segments of the market. In contrast, only a few of the key suppliers also focus on pilot operated PRV technology.

Safety Instrumented Systems Isolation Valves and Actuators

ARC’s definition of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) isolation valve assemblies includes isolation flow control equipment employed as the final control element for Safety Instrumented System (SIS).  SIS isolation valve assemblies are tasked with minimizing the chance of fire or explosion by moving the system to a safe state during process upsets.  These valves are designed to either cut off the flow of the process media within a predetermined time frame; or to move the system to the fully open state in emergency depressurization applications.

SIS valve assemblies consist of an isolation valve with a fail-safe actuator (fail open/close) and are often equipped with a device to perform partial stroke testing.  Unlike process valves, SIS valves are only used during unexpected safety events and are not prone to the cyclic wear and tear of continuous operation. In recent years it has become increasingly apparent that the total reliability of any safety loop is heavily dependent on the availability and reliability of its final elements.  When overall loop performance, from system to final element, is quantified, the weak link of many safety loops is the potential non-operability of SIS valves.

Barriers to entry remaining quite high in the SIS valve market. The growing importance of safety systems in protecting the environment, employees, plant assets, and company image drives most end-users to partner with a proven SIS valves and systems supplier for their safety system needs.

Severe Service Valves

Severe Service Valves are basically identified by the harshness of the   applications, and that these applications are challenging to the valve’s ability to provide a minimum acceptable level of performance over a minimum acceptable duration. The key determining factor for buying the sever service valves include robustness, noise reduction, anti-cavitation, price, and serviceability. The global severe service valve market is moderately fragmented.  Most the smaller suppliers are purely focused on SSV technology in either the isolation or control valve segments of the market. Whereas most of the leading suppliers in the market provide SSV valves for both control and isolation valve applications.

Maintenance is the second largest controllable cost in a typical process plant.  The SSV assets are more prone to failure due to the acute operating condition, leading to plant shutdown. The contributions that maintenance makes to the enterprise in keeping physical assets in proper working order to avoid business interruption have much greater impact on profitability and plant safety than previously acknowledged. As end users continue to invest in plant-wide asset management strategies, they are looking to gathering an increasing amount of valve health data.  Growing number of end user are investing in digitalizing their SSV operation to ensure smooth operation and avoid unaccounted downtime due to valve failure.

Valve Actuators

Valve actuators are fluid powered, electrical or hybrid devices employed for both quarter turn and multi-turn valve actuation. Valve actuators provide the necessary operating torque to either isolate (fully open or fully close) or modulate (defined intermediate position between open and close position) the output flow rate.

The valve actuators market’s competitive landscape is fragmented with fewer actuators manufacturers over valve bodies manufacturers. Also, the isolation valve actuators market is highly fragmented over modulating valve actuators, as isolation valve sales is more aligned to commodity type business over packaged solution. With hundreds of players existing in the market space, there is stiff competition among suppliers with key differentiation factors being pricing, lead time, quality, engineering support, after-sales and service capabilities. Many of the leading suppliers in the market have been following an inorganic expansion strategy by actively seeking opportunities for acquisition, to boost market share rapidly
