Siemens announced its first 5G router for industrial applications. The SCALANCE MUM856-1 is an IP65-rated wireless router that supports 5G (Rel. 15) for both public and private networks. The device, which also supports existing 3G and 4G (LTE) standards, can be configured with Siemens’ SINEMA Remote Connect VPN management platform. The product will be available in spring 2021.

Because SCALANCE MUM856-1 also includes 3G and 4G compatibility, users can get started now using existing 3G or 4G networks, or can initiate proof-of-concept tests with 5G to identify how and where 5G can be deployed in the future.

David Humphrey, ARC Advisory Group, commented,  “5G likely will be a true gamechanger in industrial communications. Until now, wireless technology has played only a minor role in industrial applications, mostly just for monitoring difficult to reach devices. As 5G evolves over the next few years, industrial users will have the chance to replace cabled networks with wireless connections, up to and including closed-loop, real-time control. But the greatest value of 5G will be in new applications that it enables, such as augmented and virtual reality in maintenance and training, and more comprehensive machine and process analytics.

“With the launch of SCALANCE MUM856-1, Siemens is signaling that it intends to be a pioneer in 5G technology for industrial applications.”
