ARC Report Abstract

Overview

At the OSIsoft EMEA User Conference held in London in October 2017, Peter van den Heuvel, Technology Lead, PI-CoE, and Dan Jeavons, General Manager, Advanced Analytics, Shell Global, spoke about Shell’s journey into advanced real-time analytics.

A previous ARC Advisory Group report covered Shell’s initiatives to transition from reactive to predictive operations, presented at the 2016 OSIsoft User Conference in Berlin, Germany.  The key message was that a corporate, uniform data model for operational data, implemented in PI Asset Framework (PI AF), enables fast self-service analytics across operational data sources from all locations.

Since then, Shell has made further progress developing and deploying advanced analytics, bringing the company a step closer to achieving predictive operations and asset management. This ARC Insight shares our own takeaways from these presentations, and – unless indicated - does not necessarily reflect Shell’s views.  The report delves deeper into how Shell is building this expertise in predictive operations and asset management using the OSIsoft Asset Framework (AF) and other advanced analytics technologies. This Insight also shares some recommended best practices for implementing PI-AF.

PI System Center of Excellence at Shell

According to Mr. Peter van den Heuvel, the PI System connects about 7.5 million tags from devices across Shell and the data is accessed by more than 15,000 employees, of which about 7,500 are daily users.  The company has partnered with OSIsoft since 1998 for real-time data collection and standardized its models and applications on the PI System.
