Project Success Story

Internet of things (IoT) is enabling customers and suppliers to explore ideas and convert them into reality. Customers can now have smart, efficient products that give process and device related information in real time, which can be used to monitor health and performance of an asset as well as optimize its utilization rate. IoT is also giving rise to new business models and revenue streams and redefining the supply chain. One such project was taken up by L&T Technology Services for its client Legrand to develop an IoT-enabled charging station, for which LTTS leveraged the latest technologies and its state-of-the-art infrastructure for power electronics. Legrand is a global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructure, offering a range of products and solutions for commercial, residential, and industrial buildings.

The Challenge: In today’s world of portable electronic devices, one of the key features of a building is a charging station. Legrand provides charging stations to public and private establishments, which includes commercial offices, airports, and public places.  It was encountering several issues with these charging stations:

  • Dysfunctional ports and sockets
  • Poor utilization of certain stations
  • Theft and vandalization of electronic components

LTTS Offers an IoT-based Solution: LTTS developed a solution that “IoTfied” the charging station, and included the following:

  • All charging station installations could be remotely tracked in a centralized facility
  • Real-time health monitoring of all ports and sockets in each charging station could be done
  • Utilization analysis of each charging station was possible now
  • In response to theft and vandalization, a retrofittable sliding lockable door was provided to make the installation secure

Business Benefits: Legrand could now remotely monitor performance of the charging stations as well as extend data support to their clients, along with several other key benefits listed below:

  • Continuous Uptime: Enabled facility managers to maximize uptime of ports and sockets in their respective charging station installations
  • Maximizing Product Usage: Through insights on utilization rates, facility managers can now shift their charging station installations to areas that have maximum users
  • New Revenue Model:  IoT-enabled charging stations generated a new revenue model for Legrand, and it now offers these insights to facility managers on a subscription basis
