L&T Technology Services hosted its Investor and Analyst Day on July 28, 2017 in Bangalore. Different time slots were allocated for investors and analysts. Investors were briefed about the company’s financial performance (group and segment), alliances and joint ventures, and key orders won. G. Ganapathiraman, Country Manager, ARC Advisory Group, India and his team were invited for the Analyst session. We were also invited to visit the company’s Digital Engineering Labs, which provide a platform for solution-oriented engineering to build a portfolio of services for all industry verticals.

The labs – referred to as “experience zones” - showed how the company is charting the digital engineering journey for its customers with advanced sensor technologies, real-time device-to-cloud connectivity, and edge analytics to create smart solutions. By leveraging strategic alliances, core capabilities, and extensive domain experience, the company is “engineering the change.” The labs: IoT, Industrial Products and Medical, Aero & Transportation, Process & Hi-tech. Each lab covers relevant areas. For example, the IoT lab focuses on the Connected Worker, Condition Monitoring of Motors, Remote Asset Performance Monitoring (RAPM), and Augmented Reality (AR) for Service Support. In each of these segments the application scenario, company’s contribution, and tangible benefits to customers were explained/demonstrated to the ARC team. Without going into too many details, let’s discuss some domains in each lab where L&T TS deployed customized solutions for the client.

IoT Lab

Remote Asset Performance Monitoring

Requirement and Solution: To digitize and monitor 35,000 fixed and moving assets at construction sites, spread across 300+ locations in India, to optimize the usage and increase productivity.

Sensor

Sensor identification, gateway selection, sensor-gateway commissioning and integrating with the L&T TS’ UBIQWeise IoT platform improved operational efficiency, increased productivity, and reduced fuel usage. Other benefits include optimization of asset utilization, avoidance of theft and pilferage, predictive maintenance of assets, and reduced operational costs.

Industrial Products & Medical Lab

Integrated Building Energy Management System (i-BEMS)

Requirement and Solution: Effective measurement and reporting to claim carbon credits for facility managers. The company designed its i-BEMS platform for building energy management to optimize energy usage and save costs without compromising the comfort of the occupants in the building. According to the company, this platform enables net-zero energy generation management with predictive and preventive maintenance, video analytics based access control and detection system that utilizes cameras instead of expensive sensor driven technology.

Customized Knee Implant Design

Requirement and Solution: Create and develop customized knee implants and cut guides, which perfectly fit the patient's knees, suiting the anatomy. This method involves end-to-end design, process verification, pre-op planning along with planning documents for doctors. All of this is designed to ensure optimal bone preservation for the patient along with anatomy-based values, needed for surgery. The benefits: reduced turnaround time from design-manufacture-shipping; higher operational efficiency of the implant at optimal cost; long-term surgery benefits.

Multipurpose Cooktop

Requirement and Solution: Automatic setting and switching of temperature profile through detection of type of cookware. L&T TS introduced dual coil technology to maintain a uniform profile across the heating surface, with a maximum of 2 degree difference between any two points on the heating surface. The company manages the entire lifecycle of the product from inception, through engineering design and manufacturing, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Benefits: largest non-commercial induction cooking surface; residual magnetic field utilized to create a high-speed wireless blender.

Aero & Transportation Lab

Electric Vehicle

Requirement and Solution: Technology advancement has provided solutions to reduce (CO2) emissions; one such solution is using environment friendly electric vehicles (EV). L&T TS provides end-to-end development of DC- DC converter, along with battery management solutions (BMS) for an EV. To make it a smart EV, the company has integrated ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) algorithms like object detection, traffic sign detection and lane departure warning.

Process & Hi-tech Lab

Smart Chipset

Requirement and Solution: New age devices and applications require faster and more efficient chips to run and process complex algorithms. The company is designing chipsets that enable applications such as 3D image processing of home automation devices, urban connectivity using mesh networks, and connected drones to provide internet access to rural areas.

After the lab visits the ARC team had a roundtable discussion with the L&T TS team to learn about their new product portfolios for various industry verticals by marrying the physical with the digital. Dr. Keshab Panda, CEO and MD, L&T TS, spoke about the company’s goals and its focus on innovation; the digital services spectrum; the company’s multi-geo engineering presence; strategies supported by best-in-class infrastructure and in-depth capabilities.
