As part of a corporate-wide digital transformation, Infineon Technologies has announced plans for Singapore to become its global artificial intelligence (AI) innovation hub. The semiconductor company has earmarked S$27 million (US$20 million) to prepare for a future driven by AI, with the investment encompassing infrastructure, AI projects, employee reskilling, and collaborations with ecosystem partners.
With some S$700 million (US$518 million) invested over the last decade, Infineon’s Singapore operation is the lead site for smart factory solutions development and the global test hub for automotive microcontroller units. It is also a key node for global distribution and one of the major microelectronics R&D centers in Asia. Infineon has been part of Singapore’s semiconductor landscape for the past 50 years, starting out first as Siemens assembling low-cost discrete transistors and diodes, and passive components.
As outlined in a media briefing during a December 1 event themed “Celebrate Think Smart, Work Smart. AI – Our Foundation for the Next 50 Years” and held to mark a half century of the company’s presence in Singapore, Infineon’s AI journey will be based on the ARISE framework: Augment digital infrastructure; Reskilling, digitally transform and drive change; Implement AI enabled projects; Share success stories and events to build community; and Expand ecosystem partnerships.
To prepare for a digital future, Infineon will empower its Singapore workforce to be capable of deploying and developing AI solutions in all business functions. More than 1,000 employees will be upskilled and around 25 unique AI projects covering the entire value chain of activities in Singapore will be deployed by 2023.
Additionally, the company will proactively engage with the semiconductor, electronics, and innovation ecosystems in Singapore through collaborations with Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific, SGInnovate, local start-ups, institutes of higher learning (IHLs) and research institutions on new AI solutions. These organizations will work on actual problem statements by leveraging Infineon’s datasets to build solutions.
