Category:
Industry Trends

The International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), held at McCormick Place in Chicago, September 8-14th, provided a venue to showcase the latest manufacturing technology and innovations. IMTS is clearly the premier exhibition for manufacturing machinery in North America. Show management reported over 114,000 registrations for the show, surpassing the attendance in 2012 by around 15 percent. McCormick Place's four halls bustled with a diverse group of equipment buyers, machine builders, and automation integrators of all ages, hailing from nations around the world. A common passion around advancing manufacturing through innovation, automation, and operational excellence unified the show.

Key takeaways from the event include:

  • An Industrial IoT ecosystem is beginning to span across the metal cut-ting operations value chain
  • Specialty applications in manufacturing justify a new array of ma-chines that combine additive and subtractive processes
  • Tier 1 robotics suppliers further validate the viability of collaborative robotics in heavier load applications
  • North America's manufacturing renaissance creates opportunities in metal cutting
