ARC Report Abstract

In his presentation at the 2020 ARC Industry Forum, Doug Scott from Husky Energy explains the company's approach to creating proactive control room operators using AVEVA operator training simulator (OTS) solutions at the Husky Lloydminster Upgrader (HLU) in Saskatchewan, Canada.   He discussed the evolution of operator training at this large heavy oil upgrader, which began using OTS technology in 1992.

Significantly, the OTS simulates both the plant's processes and Foxboro DCS and includes a twin of the live panel for control room operators to interact with.  The OTS enables the trainers to dial up the stress on the trainees to improve their response to abnormal situations without putting the plant at risk.  The training program also prepares panel operators to proactively monitor the system to identify and correct situations before they create concern.  Since HLU lacks the internal resources to do so, it relies on AVEVA to help maintain and keep the OTS up to date.
