ARC Report Abstract

Overview

End users have long been challenged to balance the need to maintain safe, stable, and predictable operations with the need to innovate and implement improvements to address Stability in Operations right%20balance.jpgchanging business imperatives. Engineering and operations groups seldom have the freedom to act unilaterally but must respond to business needs.  This involves all areas of operations, ranging from technology and product selection to business process definition and staffing.

The organizational models at some companies reflect the need to balance change and stability.  These companies have separate “run engineers” and “improvement engineers” focused on each business or facility.  Cooperation between these roles within the context of the broader strategy is an effective approach to making appropriate decisions about what changes must be made, when they are made, and how they are executed.

Stability in Operations Needs a Plan

An effective and sustainable change and improvement plan deals with constraints, while still accommodating the innovation required for lasting improvement.  Such a plan must examine the current situation, interpret the business strategy, and identify specific areas for innovation and improvement, all based on a solid business case.
