At the Hannover Messe this year, one clear change was the increased attention to software.  Many large software companies had large stands, and many other product or equipment companies featured software prominently at their stand.  I spent a bit of time in the Amazon stand, where there was this large, informative wall graphic for the AWS Manufacturing Reference Architecture; it was quite busy, so I couldn’t get a better picture. (Updated picture provided by Amazon)

AWS Manufacturing Reference Architecture

There is quite a lot of information packed into this one diagram!  Let me unpack it for you.  I’ll identify the Amazon and AWS products and services shown.

AWS IoT Greengrass seamlessly extends AWS to edge devices so they can act locally on the data they generate, while still using the cloud for management, analytics, and durable storage.

AWS IoT SiteWise is a new managed service that makes it easy to collect and organize your data from industrial equipment at scale.  You can easily monitor equipment across your industrial facilities to identify waste, such as breakdown of equipment and processes, production inefficiencies, and defects in products.

AWS Snowball Edge provides petabyte-scale data transport with on-board storage and compute capabilities

AWS IoT Core is a managed cloud service that lets connected devices easily and securely interact with cloud applications and other devices.

AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid storage service that enables your on-premises applications to seamlessly use AWS cloud storage.

Amazon Forecast is a fully managed deep-learning service for time-series forecasting.  By providing Amazon Forecast with historical time-series data, you can predict future points in the series.

AWS Lambda is a serverless compute service that runs your code in response to events and automatically manages the underlying compute resources for you.

AWS IoT Analytics is a fully-managed service that makes it easy to run and operationalize sophisticated analytics on massive volumes of IoT data without having to worry about the cost and complexity typically required to build an IoT analytics platform.

Amazon Kinesis lets you easily collect, process, and analyze video and data streams in real time

Amazon Timestream is a fast, scalable, fully managed time series database service for IoT and operational applications that makes it easy to store and analyze trillions of events per day at 1/10th the cost of relational databases.

Amazon SageMaker provides every developer and data scientist with the ability to build, train, and deploy machine learning models quickly.

AWS Outposts bring native AWS services, infrastructure, and operating models to virtually any data center, co-location space, or on-premises facility.

AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) helps you migrate databases to AWS quickly and securely.  The source database remains fully operational during the migration, minimizing downtime to applications that rely on the database.  The AWS Database Migration Service can migrate your data to and from most widely used commercial and open-source databases.

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud.

Amazon API Gateway is a fully managed service that makes it easy for developers to create, publish, maintain, monitor, and secure APIs at any scale.

Amazon AppStream 2.0 is a fully managed application streaming service.  You centrally manage your desktop applications on AppStream 2.0 and securely deliver them to any computer.

AWS Batch enables developers, scientists, and engineers to easily and efficiently run hundreds of thousands of batch computing jobs on AWS.

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud.  It is designed to make web-scale cloud computing easier for developers.

Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) provides persistent block storage volumes for use with Amazon EC2 instances in the AWS Cloud.

Amazon DynamoDB is a key-value and document database that delivers single-digit millisecond performance at any scale.

Amazon EMR is a managed cluster platform that simplifies running big data frameworks, such as Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark, on AWS to process and analyze vast amounts of data.

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is storage for the Internet.  It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.

Amazon Athena is an interactive query service that makes it easy to analyze data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL.  Athena is serverless, so there is no infrastructure to manage, and you pay only for the queries that you run.

AWS IoT Events is a fully managed IoT service that makes it easy to detect and respond to events from IoT sensors and applications.

Amazon Redshift is a fast, scalable data warehouse that makes it simple and cost-effective to analyze all your data across your data warehouse and data lake.

Amazon QuickSight is a fast, cloud-powered business intelligence service that makes it easy to deliver insights to everyone in your organization.

Is AWS in manufacturing?  Yes, they are.
